I’d like to clarify myself on the much maligned over-rated tag which is being frequently used and misused too.
In my opinion, when you call someone overrated, you are under-rating him and when you say you under-rate someone, you are in fact over-rating him.
Lewis Hamilton has had a phenomenal first season last year in Formula 1. He really should have won the World Drivers Trophy last year had it not been for the “fight” between himself and his teammate Two Time Defending Champion Fernando Alonso. In the end, both the drivers could count themselves as unlucky by missing out on a Drivers Championship after coming so close. The fact that a former Mclaren Driver in Kimi Raikkonen won the Championship must have made it more painful for the Mclaren Team.
Lewis has broken a number of records in his first year as a formula 1 driver from being the youngest driver to lead a championship in addition to being the first major “black” driver to emerge in a sport which is predominantly “white” dominated.
All that said and done,is his driving as aggressive as Alonso?
The answer is NO. Alonso has a very unique driving line,it is very difficult to make that line work but Alonso has made it work for him. Alonso’s driving line makes it possible for him to overtake easily.
Credit must be given for Alonso in a way for Hamilton’s performance last year too.People have various reasons to like or dislike Fernando but the FACT remains that Fernando is the best technical driver in Formula 1 today. His knowledge on the car setups must have helped Hamilton a lot. Whether Alonso is as fast as Raikkonen is another matter really.
Hamilton has also come under criticism from former World Champion Jacques Villeneuve with the former Champion accusing Lewis Hamilton of being over-aggressive in the start of the Grand Prix and comparing him to Michael Schumacher(with reference to his unsportsmanlike Chopping Moves).
“When will these chopping moves stop?” Villeneuve told Autosport magazine.
“Lewis is not getting penalised and his behaviour off the start has started to look the way Michael used to.”
Hamilton in my opinion has a lot to learn. He’s clearly fast and he’s got a desire to be the Champion and if the 2008 Australian GP is anything to go by,WE might just have Hamilton as the new champion.
The next time we see Hamilton win,Appreciate the win and remember the race but it’s important that the fans keep it in the right perspective as in F1 nowadays
